It was my pleasure to join my Spelman sister on her radio program, the Celeste Stein Show (June 6, 2020). We talked about what may a paradigm shift in racism in America and our views about racism. This event was recorded a few days after the tragic death of George Floyd, the African American man whose death at the hands of police has sparked global protests for justice and equality.
In the discussion, I was proud to join my long-time colleague, Dr. Pamela McAllister Johnson, who became the first African American woman to become a publisher at a mainstream daily newspaper (The Ithaca Journal, 1992). She is now a professor at Western Kentucky University.
The other guest on the show was Dr. Matthew Knowles, the renowned music executive, businessman and record producer who is known as the manager of Destiny’s Child and also the solo careers of his daughters Beyonce and Solange. He has had a distinguished career as a professor and lecturer, including at Texas Southern, Prairie View A&M, Cornell, Fisk and Rice universities.

Iâm just getting around to some of the messages youâve been sending and finished watching the Celeste Stein Show. You and Dr. Knowles were excellent! Iâll share this with others. (Iâve been working on the scholarship program âI chair the CommitteeâI mentioned a while back, and the program was this morning. Of course, we had to do it virtually this time which was a new experience. (Also Earl had a rough week the week of June 8, and had to be hospitalized twice, which was stressful for all. Heâs better, but has slowed down a bit.)
Iâll be checking out the other things youâve sent recently, and I would also like to start thinking about arranging a reading and discussion with our bookclub and other friends. Are there any dates youâd have time to meet with us? Let me know.

Ronnie, I’m happy you are considering including me in a talk with your book club. Is there a certain day/time of week that works best for you? If Sundays are good, I suggest the afternoon of July 26. If that doesn’t work, let me know. That is my only free Sunday, but other days of the week are open.
Send our regards to Earl. Jr. Alfred told us he was in the hospital. We are sending up prayers that he regains strength and good health. And remember to be safe out there. It ain’t over.
